Sonos Launch The PlayBase - A Sound Base
he new Sonos PlayBase is a sound base designed to fit underneath your TV in situations where space is tight and thereby rules out a Sonos PlayBar. In operation it will improve TV sound as well as acting as a streamer for network audio via both Ethernet and Wi-Fi, and serve up popular streaming services and internet radio. The PlayBase is also App controllable and can sync with the Play Sub and two Play 1s to form a 5.1 system. The Sonos PlayBase is not short of speakers though and uses ten amplified internal drivers – six midrange, three tweeters, and one woofer.

he Monitor Audio ASB-10 is Monitor Audio’s second sound bar , the first being the ASB-2. Like the ASB-2 the ASB-10 is also priced at £399, however the ASB-10 is a two channel 100 watts per channel soundbar. The soundbar offers a lot of drivers for the money, 2 gold dome tweeters 4 C-CAM metal cone bass / mid-range drivers and two bass radiators. Connection is either wireless via apt-x Bluetooth, or wired via optical or coax S-PDIF, or even analogue via a 3.5 mm stereo jack. The ASB-10 can also be upgraded via the addition of a wireless sub-woofer, the WS-10 Wireless Subwoofer.

The HT-NT5 is a sleek design, with 3-way speakers driven by 6 discrete amplifiers in this slim with specially-designed upright tweeters and S-Master HX amplifiers.

he Acoustic Energy Aego Sound3ar is a 2 box Soundbar that currently costs £198.99. The 3 in the product name indicates that the Sound3ar shares the same sub woofer from the Aego 3. Price wise the Sound3ar is directly comparable with the Aego 3 2.1 speaker system. The Sound3ar is designed as a solution for poor Flat screen TV sound to give a telly soundbar system with both a superb picture and sound.
Samsung Launch The HW-K650 Soundbar
he Samsung HW-K650 is a two box six speaker (and six amplifier) soundbar combined with a wireless sub-woofer speaker system that retails for £399.00. The combination of the 6 speakers and wireless sub adds up to a 3.1 channel soundbar. The Samsung HW-K650 can function as a Bluetooth speaker offering Bluetooth streaming (as well as Wi-Fi streaming) and can be expanded to a full blown surround sound system by the addition of extra Samsung Radiant360 wireless speakers.

he Yamaha YSP-5600 Soundbar is just one box but is capable of creating a Dolby Atmos Sound Field. It achieves this Dolby Atmos Surround sound from a 44-speaker array in a total 46-speaker configuration — which is largest number of speakers ever in a Yamaha YSP Soundbar. The ATMOS height effect is achieved via six height channel speakers on each side which provide 3D surround sound reproduction equivalent to a 7.1.2 channels Dolby Atmos system. With Yamaha's MusicCast system you can playback music via your smart device on the Yamaha YSP-5600 and use the smart device to control the YSP-5600. The YSP-5600 can even stream music content to other MusicCast products. Playback can be both wired and wireless via Airplay Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and Wi-Fi.

he Sony HT-XT3 Soundbar RRP £449.00 but available for quite a bit less on Amazon (£359.97 at the time of writing) is a Soundbar that can also be used as a Soundbase and a Bluetooth speaker (using Sony's top of the range LDAC Bluetooth CODEC) - both NFC, Ethernet and Wi-Fi communication with the HT-XT3 are also possible. There's 3 HDMI wired connections too. The HT-XT3 is a 2.1 soundbar so has a built in subwoofer and offers a very powerful 350 Watts per channel along with Hi-Res Audio replay.

he Philips Fidelio XS1 at R.R.P. of £499 but available for less is a two box soundbase (a soundbar where the treble mid section is sturdy enough to support a TV). The XS1 can also function as a Bluetooth speaker via support for the aptX Codec. The Soundbase part of the Fidelio XS1 features two centre channel speakers and two side firing speakers to boost surround sound. The second box in the XS1 is a wireless sub woofer. Finally the XS1 offers Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround as well as NFC communication.

he £400 Q Acoustics Media 4 or M4 is described as a HiFi Soundbar and even has a built-in Subwoofer. It’s a 2.1 Soundbar with two BMR speakers (BMR stands for Balanced Mode Radiator see more later) accompanying the subwoofer. The Q Acoustics Media 4 doesn’t have any HDMI inputs, There are analogue inputs and digital input is optical via a supplied optical cable. It can however be used as a Bluetooth speaker allowing you to stream from a tablet or smartphone using either aptX Bluetooth or NFC. Given Q Acoustics recent speaker success it’s unlikely there will be any complaints about the Q Acoustics Media 4 Soundbar’s sound quality.
